Imagine waking up one morning to the sound of running water. You get up out of bed to investigate where the water is coming from, only to find your toilet in the second floor bathroom has overflowed. You investigate further and find 2 inches of water downstairs and your first floor bathroom and kitchen are damaged. Your first reaction….. WHAT SHOULD I DO!!
- Try to stop further damage by turning the water off at the source
- Contact your insurance company or agent immediately. They can assist you with the claims process. They can also recommend a water mitigation company, such as Servpro or Mark I Restoration to start the clean up process.
The water mitigation company will work closely with your insurance carrier to assure all damaged walls, flooring, etc. are removed and the drying out process is started.
Your insurance carrier adjuster will work with you to discuss damages and begin the repair process.
- Keep all receipts or bills of sale for out of pocket expenses incurred to mitigated damages. These should be submitted to your insurance carrier for reimbursement.
Keep in mind, your homeowner policy will only pay for damages incurred for the water damage. They will not pay to repair or replace the source that caused the damage , ie: toilet, pipes, appliances, etc.
A good rule of thumb when involved with an water damage claim, is to mitigate the water as soon as possible to prevent further damage and mold.
