My Time as a Summer Intern at JKJ

Obtaining an internship is an integral part of any student’s career development. Last summer I had what I would call a summer job. It was something that would keep me busy until school started again. I don’t view my internship at JKJ as a “summer job; I view it as a great opportunity to gain experience in an industry I would like to have a career in.

I have been working at JKJ for nearly 3 months now and I have enjoyed every day of it. Each intern has a mentor in their respective department. Seeing that I am an accounting major going into my junior year at Penn State, I have spent my summer working in the accounting department. Experiencing hands on how the financial side of a business operates on a day to day basis is something you don’t learn in the classroom. I am receiving experience that most fellow students might not receive until next summer. While I am working for the accounting department I have also learned valuable information about the insurance side of the business. Learning both the financial and insurance side of the business is more than I could have hoped for heading into this summer internship.

It is easy to see why JKJ has been voted one of the best places to work. When you hear that JKJ is a family, you don’t realize what that means until you experience it which I have been lucky enough to do this summer. Everyone in the office makes the interns feel as if they have been working here for years. I was lucky enough to be invited to play in a clients golf outing with one of the producers. It was nice to learn more about the business outside of the office while having some fun. Not to mention that our JKJ group took second in the tournament.

Throughout the summer our intern class has developed a strong bond. In the beginning, it took us all a couple of days to get to know each other, but once we did start talking we all instantly became friends. We began having intern lunches every Tuesday and Thursday. Having such a good relationship with all of the other interns is just another aspect of why this summer internship has been so great. I am excited to take the knowledge I have learned here at JKJ onto my next adventure and eventually my career. I am tremendously thankful to everyone at JKJ for making my summer internship such an enjoyable and valuable experience.
